Weingut Maximin Grünhaus - Outstanding Vinothek in Mosel
The von Schubert family's wine-growing history goes back a long way. The Maximin Grünhaus winery has been family-owned since 1882, making it one of the most traditional estates in the region. In 1981 Conrad von Schubert took over the business and received numerous awards, especially in the 2000s. In 2014 he handed over management to his son Maximin von Schubert, who lives and works on the estate with his wife Amelie. Since then, the wine estate has been known above all for the successful transition into the modern age - as well as for excellent Rieslings.
History is not only an anchor, but also a motivation to take a new step forward again and again. The location of the winery has always been spectacular: the historic castle stands at the foot of a steep southern slope, planted with natural wild herbs between the rows of vines. The entire vineyard slope belongs solely to the family and is made up of three monopole vineyards. A rarity in Germany that can be written on the bottle: Abtsberg, Herrenberg, Bruderberg.
All three locations are in comparatively cool parts of the Mosel region. In times of global warming, this is an advantage that allows for the production of fresh and particularly fine Rieslings. And although the Mosel region is primarily known for Rieslings, the Maximin Grünhaus winery also produces a Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), both of which are finely and elegantly crafted. In the case of Rieslings, the dry ones have grip and minerality, as well as a little spice, while the sweeter styles are fruity without sacrificing freshness.
The furnishing of the vinothek is proof of the refined development and direction of the estate. Amelie von Schubert says: "We wanted to proceed with great sensitivity for the history and still integrate a modern and functional vinothek." In close cooperation with the architect, a table made of Grünhauser oak became the focus of the room. Roll containers made of wood, which look noble and are movable at the same time, can be placed and used differently depending on the occasion, much like the agile approach of the family.
Overall, the vinothek is reduced to the essentials and leaves space to appreciate the heritage windows, doors with brass decorations as well as the old fireplace. A long bar is integrated into the ensemble. "We are targeting wine lovers from all over the world," says Amelie von Schubert. The cult label of the winery in Art Nouveau style, received a small facelift in 2016, without forgetting its traditional roots, yet another sign of the sensitive evolution taking place in this historic estate.
