Outstanding Vinothek in Rheingau
What does the vinothek of Weingut Schreiber in Hochheim am Main have to do with New Zealand? When it comes to inspiration, quite a lot! In fact, the idea to create an extraordinary place for the presentation of their own wines came from the junior boss. Having just come of age and completed his studies, Simon Schreiber travelled to the island nation to work in wine tourism for six months. "People are already a few steps ahead there, and I took a lot of photos to gather ideas and thoughts," says the 27-year-old, who is the eleventh generation to help run the wine business.
The result of a passionate creation process has now been seen and experienced by visitors for three years - especially in summer, the vinothek is the heart of various events such as the "Organic Wine Tastival". After his father flirted briefly with organic viticulture in the 1990s and Simon specialized further in his training, the winery has been certified organic since 2018. Moreover, 70 percent of the grapes are now carefully picked by hand. Structural aspects such as the winery's own wood chip heating system, photovoltaic cells and a rainwater cistern are part of the environmental awareness that is manifest here. And also, in the construction of the vinothek, great importance was attached to the use of sustainable materials.
An impressive example are the imposing 22 meters of shelving on the only non-glazed wall of the building: These were made entirely from the trunk of a single oak. In other respects, too, the Schreibers rely on clear lines and lots of light wood - for example in the elegant and “maximally multifunctional” presentation tables for local, single-vineyard and sweet wine, which can also be used for one of the many private events. Regardless of whether it's about the table design or the elaborate wooden slat ceiling - Simon Schreiber can not only tell you something about every detail, but has actually worked hands on to make his dream come true.
And even if the focus is, of course, on the 25 wines and four types of sparkling wine on these almost 250 square meters - unconsciously, your gaze wanders off again and again to the peaceful vineyard panorama outside in front of the floor to ceiling glass windows. "We have spectacularly beautiful sunsets here," says the young winemaker smiling, who knows that such a view in the middle of the densely populated Rhine-Main area is something special.
Just like the local cheese selection from Affineuren "Around the Corner" and the handpicked cold cuts platter. Or the organic burgers and sausages, which Schreiber prefers to prepare himself for events - due to his own high standards of quality and regionality. The regular customers are grateful: the family sells 70,000 bottles, or 70% of its production, directly from the winery. And so that more new guests find their way to Weingut Schreiber, the 27-year-old also wants to offer tasting sets, or "Wine Flights” as they’re called in NZ.
