Weingut Braunewell - Outstanding Vinothek in Rheinhessen

Many wineries in Germany can look back on a rich history. In the case of Weingut Braunewell, it even goes back to the 17th century, when François Breiniville moved from Villepot-Loraine to Essenheim in the Rheinhessen region and established a livelihood in agriculture and viticulture. The winery is an example of one of the most dynamic wine regions in Germany: wineries that are linked to tradition but are steadily moving into the future. In Rheinhessen in particular, young winemakers regularly draw attention to themselves, giving their parents' businesses a new lease of life.

This is also the case with the Braunewells, who now run the business hand in hand with three generations, above all the young brothers Christian and Stefan Braunewell. They want to lead the winery into a new era of wine. With their wine portfolio and sparkling wines, they succeed with the whole range. Sustainability also plays an important role; the winery is a member of "Fair'n Green". This is a seal for sustainability in viticulture that takes into account all areas, from business management to environmental protection and social commitment.

Another step in the modernisation of the winery that has been outstandingly successful for the family is the vinothek. A design full of character gives ambience to the space. The architecture is reduced to the essentials in order to blend into the landscape. The large window fronts offer a view of the wine landscape. In addition to glass and concrete, natural sandstone walls give a homely atmosphere. "We wanted to create a place for wine experiences," says Stefan Braunewell, who is glad that the old sales and tasting room in the cellar is a thing of the past.

A number of details invite visitors not only to taste but to really experience the wines. Directly in front of the vinothek is the vineyard. Each row contains a different grape variety from the winery's portfolio. So, not only the differences between Riesling, Chardonnay and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) can be seen directly while tasting the wines, but also the similarities in vine pruning and development can also be explained.

The sparkling wine cellar, where the winemakers produce sparkling wine according to the champagne method of bottle fermentation, is open to visitors. "Here you can try for yourself how to riddle (turn) sparkling wine bottles so that the yeast settles," says Braunewell. The vinothek offers the latest wines for tasting, but there are also tasting ‘flights’ to explore the various sparkling wines or Rieslings from different individual sites. There are always a few rarities on the menu. You can't buy them, but you can at least taste how the wines have developed after a little aging in the cellar. "We are an artisanal winery and want to convey our work," says Stefan Braunewell.
